Our Vision
To shape a future where every older adult in Hong Kong enjoys a vibrant, healthy, and socially connected life, empowered by strong community support and evidence-based care.
Our Mission
As our city's demographics evolve, the Hong Kong Longevity Study is dedicated to ensuring that longer lives mean healthier, more fulfilling lives. Led by Prof Jed Montayre, Associate Head (Strategy) and Associate Professor at the School of Nursing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, our team conducts impactful, evidence-based research to support Hong Kong's transition toward a healthy lifespan. We believe that true healthy longevity requires looking beyond physical medicine to understand the holistic, social environments in which our community lives.
Our Purpose & Approach
Our primary aim is to generate longitudinal evidence on healthy aging by engaging directly with our neighborhoods. Through community-based observation and targeted data collection, we seek to uncover pressing chronic disease risk indicators and identify actionable pathways for preventive care. Ultimately, our findings are intended to inform and shape future community health promotion and healthy aging strategies across Hong Kong.
Core Research Themes
To build a comprehensive picture of aging in Hong Kong, our research is driven by three interconnected pillars:
Promoting Preventive Health
We assess objective health measures within the community to track chronic disease risks and elevate public awareness around preventive strategies, such as essential cancer screening pathways.
Addressing Social Frailty
We recognize that social isolation significantly impacts overall well-being. Our team actively studies these vulnerabilities and develops early-identification measures—such as our Montayre Social Frailty-10 (SF-10) screening tool—to pinpoint older adults who are experiencing or are at risk of social frailty. This allows us to better understand how social disconnection affects daily functioning, health, and quality of life.
Advancing Social Prescribing
Connecting individuals to non-clinical community resources is vital for long-term resilience. We explore social prescribing as a structured approach to combat disconnection, ensuring older adults build the community relationships and support systems necessary to thrive.
By bridging the gap between physical health metrics and social well-being, the Hong Kong Longevity Study strives to build the evidence-based foundation for a more vibrant, age-friendly society.
